What Is a Center Table?

A center table is a low table — typically 40–45 cm tall — placed within reach of the seats in a sitting room. In Nigeria the terms center table, centre table and coffee table all describe the same piece and are used interchangeably; the spelling you search for makes no difference to what you get. It is distinct from a side table or stool, which stands beside a single seat, and from a console, which sits against a wall.

Its job is practical before it is decorative: a surface everyone seated can reach without standing up. Rectangular

The default, and the right answer for most Nigerian sitting rooms. A rectangle mirrors the line of a 3-seater or an L-shaped sectional and gives the most usable surface per centimetre of floor taken. Choose this unless something about the room argues otherwise.

Round and Oval

No corners, which matters in two situations: sitting rooms with young children, and rooms where the walkway between the sofa and the TV stand is tight. A round table also suits curved or modular seating, where a rectangle would fight the shape of the sofa.

Nesting and 2-in-1

Two or three tables that tuck under each other and pull apart when you need more surface. This is the strongest option for a compact Lagos flat: it gives you the surface area of a large table only on the days you actually need it, and the footprint of a small one the rest of the time.

Storage and Lift-Top

A lower shelf, drawers, or a top that lifts to reveal a compartment. Worth the extra cost in a sitting room that doubles as a study or a place where remotes, chargers and documents accumulate on open surfaces.

Glass Top

Glass creates a feeling of openness, which is why it is the most common request for smaller sitting rooms — it reflects light and lets the rug and floor show through, so the room reads larger than it is. Sizing a Center Table to Your Sofa

Three measurements account for nearly every “the table looks wrong” complaint we hear in the Lagos showroom. Check all three before ordering.

• Width — two-thirds of the sofa. A 7-seater around 2.4 m long needs a table roughly 150–170 cm wide. A 5-seater takes 120–140 cm, a 3-seater 90–110 cm. Wider than two-thirds crowds the seating; narrower and the table looks lost in the room.

• Shape — follow the seating. Rectangular for L-shaped and U-shaped arrangements, round or oval for curved and modular seating, square between two facing sofas — the classic formal Nigerian layout.

The Nigerian industry-standard size is roughly 45 cm tall × 70 cm wide × 120 cm long, which pairs comfortably with a standard 3-seater. Anything materially smaller is a side or accent table; anything larger is a statement piece that needs an oversized seating layout to carry it. For compact rooms, the better move is not a shorter rectangle but a round table 60–80 cm across, or a nesting pair.

Care and Delivery

Each surface has one thing that matters more than the rest of the routine:

• Marble — wipe spills immediately, especially citrus, vinegar and red wine, which etch the stone. Use coasters, clean weekly with mild soap, avoid ammonia and abrasive sponges, and reseal annually on heavy-use tables.
• Glass — clean with warm water and a few drops of vinegar, wipe in straight lines with a microfibre cloth to avoid streaks, and lift objects rather than dragging them. Tempered glass resists impact but is not scratch-proof.
• Wood — dust with a soft dry cloth, use coasters under hot or wet items, and apply wax or natural oil every 6–12 months on solid pieces. Keep it out of long-term direct sunlight, which fades natural tones.
